Over 250 persons have been taken into custody in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal immigration control operations, according to government statements.

Expanding Federal Measures

Charlotte represents the most recent American city to experience heightened federal involvement, following comparable operations in larger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles in recent months. Administration representatives have asserted that those apprehended include criminal elements and street gang participants.

Community Opposition

However, elected officials and inhabitants have strongly criticized the detainments, which federal authorities have called "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's top elected official has asserted that individuals are being singled out based on their ethnicity.

"We've seen covered, heavily armed agents in tactical attire driving plain vehicles, targeting American individuals based on their physical characteristics, practicing racial profiling and arresting unspecified people in public spaces," commented the state governor. "This strategy is not enhancing our protection."

Administration Viewpoint

In a newly released declaration, a federal representative asserted that the operation has resulted in the arrest of "including the most threatening criminal unauthorized persons", including gang members.

Other individuals arrested had been found guilty for various crimes, including attacks against law enforcement agents, operating vehicles under influence, larceny and tampering with government documents, according to the agency.

Community Feedback

The city's chief executive, likewise a liberal politician, encouraged federal agents to work with "consideration" for the city's standards. She also applauded those who took part in significant quantities on Saturday to demonstrate against the federal government's actions in the city.

"I am profoundly troubled by many of the videos I've observed," commented the mayor. "To all individuals in Charlotte who is feeling concerned or fearful: you are not alone. Your city backs you."

Ongoing Operations

Federal authorities have not announced how long the operations will continue. Chicago's operation began in September and continues active. Like other cities experiencing immigration crackdowns, some migrants in Charlotte are remaining indoors due to concern about federal authorities in the metropolitan area, according to local media.

The top official stated he's monitoring reports that the campaign will expand to Raleigh, a different North Carolina urban center, next.

"Yet again, I call on federal agents to focus on violent criminals, not neighbors moving along the avenue, visiting church, or putting up holiday decorations," he stated.
