Thomas Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Home Crowd Support Despite Comfortable Wales Victory.
The England head coach expressed his disappointment that the Three Lions team did not get stronger encouragement from the home crowd during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his team maintain their strong performance, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the game. But, he was not content with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we excelled,” the coach commented. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. The stadium was silent. We didn’t get support from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the team warranted greater backing today.”
“I support this statement. We cannot do more than being three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a greater backing in moments where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with fans, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. However the decision was justified by Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel said. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his spot.”
Bellamy Hopes for Improvement from Loss
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Monday, learn from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this friendly,” Bellamy said. “I wanted to assess where we are. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? Today gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Watkins was withdrawn at the break after clattering into a goalpost and may miss out when the national team face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
